The Elements of Summer: Fire & Water

Feels like: Hot, Humid & Bright

Qualities to introduce and reduce:


Cooling, Neutralising, Slow (relaxing) & dry.


Heating, Sharp; acidic, Sharp; quick, fast paced & intense), Oily

Potential signs & symptoms of imbalance:

Acid indigestion, Puffiness, Red skin inflammation, Irritability

Tastes to enjoy:

Bitter, Astringent, Sweet


Summer Foods Guide

Favour foods that are cooling, calming and slightly dry.

Foods to favour:

  • Bitter and astringent vegetables such as courgette, broccoli, leafy greens, celery, green beans and fennel root
  • Sweet, not sour, dairy products such as milk & ghee (or alternatives if you don’t have dairy)
  • Light, neutral grains such a quinoa, white basmati rice and barley
  • Sweet, neutral fruits such as grapes, pomegranates, stone fruits, melons and limes
  • Cool & light proteins such as mung beans, tofu and for non vegetarians, lean white meats and fish
  • Coconuts & coconut products: water, milk, meat and sugar
  • Cooling spices & herbs such as fennel seeds, coriander, parsley, cardamom, mint & turmeric; aloe juice

Foods to reduce:

  • Spicy foods
  • Coffee – use dandelion root as an alternative
  • Vinegar and other ferments (use balsamic vinegar in moderation)
  • Alcohol (spirits & red wine are the most aggravating 
  • Salty foods
  • Raw tomatoes
  • Raw onion
  • Red meat and egg yolks
  • Orange juice
  • Sour dairy products such as packaged yoghurts & hard cheeses
  • Heating foods such as chillies & honey
  • Anything fried of excessively oily


Summer Lifestyle Guidelines

  • Use coconut oil for Abhyanga massage (unless your body runs cold, even in warm weather). You may add relaxing scents such as Jasmine, Lavender & Rose essential oils. Oil massage can be practised morning or evening to help you to cool down. These can also be used in your bath if you can’t have a massage
  • Practice moderation in choosing activities & avoid over scheduling yourself
  • Engage in non-competitive exercise like swimming, moderate yoga & walking
  • Take cool baths & showers
  • Stay out of the midday sun but do enjoy time in nature. Spend time outside when the sun is lower int he sky or try moon bathing instead of sun bathing 
  • Drink room temperature or cool water, not cold or ice water

The key is to listen you what your body is saying to you!
